Happy Wednesday!
We crossed another national park off our bucket list last weekend. We visited Petrified Forest National Park in northeastern Arizona. You may think the photo above is of a big, big log. Well, it used to be, but now it’s solid rock! This giant log was named Old Faithful by the wife of a park superintendent. She said the log was to Petrified Forest what the Old Faithful geyser is to Yellowstone National Park, and the name stuck. The amount of petrified wood in the area was incredible!

Millions of years ago, the area had a climate similar to Costa Rica has today. There was a large river. Trees fell into the river and there was a log jam in a bend where these trees got stuck and were buried by sediment over time. Millions of years later, we have rocks that look like logs! So cool!

We saw petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock.

On the way to Arizona, we passed through Monument Valley and just HAD to take a photo from iconic Forrest Gump Point:

And on the way home, we stopped at Horseshoe Bend:

Here’s the updated list as of 4/12/2025. 27 down, 36 to go!

As always, your pictures are outstanding. When we went to Petrified Forest NP Kevin told me he and his family had visited when he was a little boy. He said he was so confused when he got there because isn’t a “forest” trees standing up tall? HAHA I can totally see where his thinking was. The beauty there is something everyone should see, I think. And Walnut Canyon SP…I can’t even imagine how people got to their houses there in the rocks. Just amazing to see!

Wow, these are incredible pictures. The petrified trees look so much like trees and not rocks!

Well, well, well. You were about 4 hours North of me! Isn’t it incredible to see those fossilized logs?
We have purchased a lot of Petrified Wood for our Yard. (A ranch near the park has lots of petrified wood for people to dig up or purchase.)
Another time, I found a log on a property that invites people to dig for a price. However, it was not at all close to the Petrified Forest. The log was in whitish-grayish soil, so my petrified wood log is whitish-gray. I find it all very interesting.
Good for you to cross another NP off your list. I am so glad you got to see Monument Valley and Horseshoe Canyon! They are incredible sights!
Happy Easter, Lenore!

Yes, it was great. Arizona has a lot of variety! I didn’t take photos, but we also visited Walnut Canyon State Park and saw the cliff dwellings. Is there anywhere in Arizona that you haven’t visited but where you still want to?

I am so pleased that you added another park to your list! I was so surprised when I went there recently that it is so cool. Before I randomly found it, I had never even heard of it. But then I saw it and loved it!! Your photos are great. https://crystaltrulove.com/2022/03/19/petrified-forest-national-park/

Thanks for the link to your post! That was fun to see those very familiar sites and read of your experience. Luckily our weather was pretty perfect. Hardly any wind…maybe a slight breeze to make things pleasant.
