a NEW reading challenge

Happy Saturday!

I realized I haven’t posted about my NEW reading challenge. This year, I wanted to join the “When Are You Reading” challenge. Below are the categories. I have a few more to fill in. Any suggestions?

The time periods are:

  • Pre 1200: Pope Joan
  • 1300-1499: The House on the Strand
  • 1500-1699: The Miniturist
  • 1700-1799: A Girl Called Samson
  • 1800-1899: Where the Lost Wander
  • 1900-1919: Moloka’i
  • 1920-1939: The Christie Affair
  • 1940-1959: The Last Year of the War; The Book Woman’s Daughter
  • 1960-1979: Necessary Lies
  • 1980-1999: I Will Always Write Back: How One Letter Changed Two Lives
  • 2000-Present: The Girl in the Glass
  • The Future: Illuminae

There are so many fun challenges. I’ve got 6 more to read for this challenge, and then I think I’ll start an Around the World reading challenge. As always, send any book recommendations my way! I’m always looking for wonderful NEW books to read!

Have a great day and I hope you do or learn something NEW today!

a NEW photo challenge entry and other miscellany

Happy Friday! It’s been a while since I joined in on a photo challenge. So, when I saw this week’s #362 Sports, Sporting Events, and Fun Games challenge at Wandering Dawgs, I thought of a fun event we recently attended and wanted to join the challenge. This baseball game was played at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan. The players dressed up in vintage baseball uniforms and played with rules from 1867. That means NO baseball mitts (they weren’t invented yet), and many other slight variations from current baseball rules. It was a lot of fun!

And other miscellaneous NEW experiences:

Thanks to reading Travel Means Life, I was “in the know” when we saw several Quilt Gardens in Indiana.

Then, in Genesee County, New York, spotting quilt blocks on barns, houses, or sheds etc. is a thing! There is even a website about it {HERE}. Are there any other quilt related I-Spy-type hunts that I don’t know about??? :o)

And lastly, I thought I’d list the random museums we’ve visited in the last few weeks….just so you know that we do more than hike to waterfalls and visit national parks, haha!

We’ve visited:

Jell-O museum! (Did you know there’s such a place?!?)

The Corning Glass Museum

The Safe Haven Holocaust Museum

The Detroit Art Museum

The world’s largest Christmas store! (Bronner’s)

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The Town of Stafford’s Historical Museum

The George Eastman Museum and House Tour

I think that’s enough for now. I gotta go research more NEW things to do, see, or learn about! Have a great day!

a NEW challenge: Six Sentence Story

Happy Saturday! I was recently reading my favorite blogs and learned about something NEW (to me): The Six Sentence Story blog hop. The theme of the post I was reading was RANK, so I immediately wrote my Six Sentence Story about RANK because the theme held special meaning for me this week. Well, I soon realized that theme was for waaayyyy back in February! Oh well, I’m posting it anyway! :o) But I’ll also include my Six Sentence Story for this week’s theme: MINUTE. Here goes!

RANK:

This coming Monday, 30 June 2025, will be my Retirement Day! Instead of researching the families of unaccounted-for service members from WWII with ranks such as PVT, SSGT, SGT, 1LT, 2LT, CPT, etc., I will be leaving those duties to others. I wish them much success in their research, because it is such important work. It has been an honor, and I will always cherish the phone calls I had with family members who exclaimed, “Thank you for the work you are doing – our loved ones will never be forgotten!”. I will miss explaining to those family members how their mitochondrial DNA or their y-DNA or their SNP could possibly help identify their relative. Thank you, soldiers (of all ranks), and your families, for your service!

Now on to this week’s theme!

MINUTE

My one and only grandchild turns one year old today! The minute she opens her eyes, she will see the hard work of her parents…the gifts, the decorations etc. The minute she tastes cake for the first time will be a joy to see. The minute she rips the colorful paper off her gifts will be so fun for her! How did all the minutes, hours and days go by so quickly? One year old today, sweet precious girl!

Have a wonderful weekend. I hope you learn or do something NEW!

NEW challenges for the NEW year..and what I’m into lately

Happy NEW year! (How can it be Jan 10th already!?!)

I don’t particularly do “resolutions” but I do like a good challenge. It makes things fun. So here are my 2025 challenges:

Reading challenges:

Read at least 52 books

Read 12 books in the 12 different time periods suggested at “When Are Your Reading Challenge)

Read all books by a certain author (I think my best shot at doing this is reading all of Susan Meissner’s books).

Travel challenges:

I already have my travel challenges ongoing. Visiting 100 waterfalls and all of the National Parks. We’ll be doing quite a bit of traveling this year, so I’m sure it will be easy to add to these lists, but here are a few marked for this year:

Visit Acadia NP, New River Gorge NP, Indiana Dunes NP, Cuyahoga Valley NP, Shenandoah NP and Gateway Arch NP.

And of course, visiting Iguazu Falls is happening this year. Yay!

Physical challenges:

Do another (or multiple) 30-day steps challenge (might be easy as we’re hiking to waterfalls!).

Do a 30-day yoga challenge

Ride on 20 (NEW-to-you) bike trails.

And lastly, what am I into???

Junk journals and art journals! I LOVE looking on Pinterest at creative art journals and watching videos about making junk journals. I’ve got one of each started (one art journal and one junk journal). My plan is for the junk journal to be vintage looking and I’ll be answering questions from a book my son gave me a few years ago called, “Tell me your story, MOM”. The art journal will be more vibrant and I will do some decoupage, watercolor, digital art, and other types of art. I created all of the images in this post with AI (Midjourney). I will use the image above as a focal point in one of my collages. That might seem like cheating, but anything goes in my journals, haha!

That’s it for my 2025 plans. My interests might change next week and I might be into something totally NEW and different! I’ll let you know. Maybe sometime I should do a blogging challenge and try to update this site a bit more regularly, haha! Anyway, I hope you have a fantastic day and that you get to learn or do something NEW today! Take care!

NEW November challenges

Happy Friday and happy November!

I love the start of a NEW week, a NEW month or a NEW year! How about you? As Gretchen Rubin says, the calendar can be a catalyst. She even created a Calendar of Catalysts (link here if you’re interested).

I thought I’d blog about my goals for November. That will keep me accountable, right!?! I always try to challenge myself in a few different areas such as physical, spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, financial, etc. So, here are my 3 November challenges:

Physical: Walk 11k steps daily

Intellectual: Read at least 6 books this month

Emotional: Do the Action For Happiness Challenge: New Ways November

Just this morning, I learned about the Action For Happiness site from Deb’s World blog. I thought this would be awesome, because as you know, I LOVE trying NEW things! Here’s their November Calendar. I’ll report back at the end of the month on how I did!

I’d better go and start getting some steps in! Take care and have a lovely day. I hope you get to learn or do something NEW today!

my NEW copycat photo challenge

Happy Tuesday!

I’m attempting a fun NEW photo project this year. Actually, I’ve tried it before but failed, so I’m hoping I can keep it going this year. I’m going to copycat Nora’s 365 photo challenge. I’ve got an alarm set on my phone to remind me to take a photo (if I haven’t already). The trick is to NOT ignore the alarm, which is tempting if I’m right in the middle of something. The 2nd trick is to remember to reset the alarm; because if you don’t, you might be in bed that night and realize you didn’t take your photo and have to get up and go snap a photo of something random around your home! (Ask me how I know!) :o)

Wish me luck! My favorite so far is this one:

Have a great day! I hope you do or learn or take a photo of something NEW!

Miscellaneous Monday…NEW stuff i gotta share

Happy Monday!

Isn’t this a gorgeous sunset?! I’m in debt to my sister-in-law for snapping this photo because I was too busy playing pickleball to stop and grab my phone to capture this beauty!

That’s me…right there (above). I really was playing, not just standing there, haha!

And, that’s NOT me (below). I tried something NEW this week. I tried Float Therapy. It was an interesting experience.

This Tedx Talks explains the benefits of Float Therapy; but in case you don’t want to watch the TEdx Talk, I’ll list a few benefits too.

Here is a list of the benefits of float therapy, based on scientific evidence:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety: Float therapy can help to reduce the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body, while also increasing the levels of the mood-boosting hormone endorphins. This can lead to a reduction in stress levels, anxiety, and depression.
  • Improves sleep quality: Float therapy can help to improve sleep quality by reducing stress and anxiety, and by promoting deep relaxation.
  • Relieves pain and muscle tension: The weightless environment of a float tank can help to relieve pain and muscle tension by reducing the pressure on the joints and spine.
  • Boosts mood and creativity: The deep relaxation and sensory deprivation experienced during float therapy can help to boost mood, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Accelerates muscle recovery: The Epsom salt solution used in float tanks can help to accelerate muscle recovery after exercise or injury.
  • Improves skin health: The Epsom salt solution can also help to improve skin health by reducing inflammation and promoting cell regeneration.
  • Reduces inflammation: Float therapy has been shown to reduce inflammation throughout the body. This can be beneficial for people with chronic inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, and Crohn’s disease.
  • Boosts the immune system: The reduction in stress and inflammation caused by float therapy can also help to boost the immune system.
  • Improves cardiovascular health: Float therapy has been shown to improve cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure and improving heart rate variability.
  • Reduces migraine headaches: Float therapy can help to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine headaches.
  • Improves cognitive function: Float therapy has been shown to improve cognitive function, including memory, attention, and processing speed.
  • Reduces chronic pain: Float therapy can help to reduce chronic pain from conditions such as arthritis, back pain, and fibromyalgia.
  • Improves mental health: Float therapy can help to improve mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression.

Lastly, I’m making NEW plans to do a “30 Days of Culture” challenge – similar to Gretchen Rubin. The trick is to figure out the best month (or just 30 days) to do such a challenge! I want to do this because I love culture and want more of it in my life! Here’s a quote from Gretchen:

One reason that I love it is that it gives me a nudge to do things that I wouldn’t ordinarily do, exposes me to culture that I might miss, and takes me places that I love.

That sounds like a wonderful way to Explore NEWness, yes?! I’ll keep you updated on the when, and the what (you already know the why!). :o)

Have a great day! Do or learn something NEW!

a NEW photo and Friday challenge accountability

bostoncommonfr.jpg

Happy Friday!

The photo above is of Boston Common. It is the oldest public park in the country – dating back to 1634! It was fun to watch all the people take advantage of nature’s beauty!

It’s Friday, so I’ve gotta take note of how I’m doing on a couple of my challenges. So, I’m pluggin’ along on my 12 Classics challenge.  I’m working on #11 (the scary one)…the book is just so, so, SO long!

On my Photo Challenges, I’ve completed photograph a stranger and want to do the ‘frame worthy street photograph’ next.

I’ve just started training for a century bike ride, so that challenge is on track.  I plan to ride 3-4 times a week and increase the mileage by 5 miles each week. The ride date is the middle of August. I did this…oh, about a decade ago.  It takes time to train…a summer with relatively few travel plans or other distractions.  I think this summer will be good.

Lastly, after hearing of all the benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar, I think I want to challenge myself to start incorporating that into my day. I really don’t like the taste, so I’m sure there are tricks on Pinterest I’ll have to check out.

That’s it.  Let me know of any fun challenges I should be aware of! Have a great day.  Do something NEW!

another NEW challenge

So far, I’m enjoying my “Classics Reading Challenge“.  3 out of 12 are done…in the books, as they say. This challenge gives me the boost to read things I normally wouldn’t pick up.  It’s exactly why I love belonging to my book club group.  Having others pick a book, and having the opportunity to read it, digest it, discuss it, is just one of those things I really enjoy.

BUT…on to the announcement of my next NEW challenge! I recently read a blog that had a series called “30 days of…”  and I figured I could try a NEW challenge for the next 30 days.  So, I’ve decided to de-junk or organize something different for the next 30 days.  There’s something about writing my challenges here on this blog.  It somehow puts it out in the universe and then I’M COMMITTED!!! I HAVE to do it!!!! My only problem is what to do if I’m out of town?????  I’ve decided I just have to make it up by catching up.  As long as I’ve de-junked 30 spaces, I will have succeeded at the challenge.
