Miscellaneous Monday…NEW stuff i gotta share
Happy Monday! First, I just have to say that I don’t use the Shazam app on my phone too often, but when I do, I smile and exclaim, ‘This is a beautiful thing!’ Sometimes on my commute…{much longer these days}, I’ll either listen to the classical radio station, a TED talk, a podcast or book on CD from the library. Recently I was listening to the radio and Mendelssohn’s Hebrides overture was playing. I knew I had played that piece in one of the orchestras I had belonged to throughout the years….but could I think of the title of the piece? NO! So I Shazam-ed it. This wonderful app did not fail me! Plus the radio announcer explained the history of the piece, so I learned something NEW about Fingal’s Cave. That day’s commute was awesome!
We also recently attended a concert of a friend who played ‘Concert Paraphrase of The Song of the Soldiers of the Sea‘ which was NEW to me. Our friend’s fingers were flying! Loved it!
Lastly, I’ll just share a recent minor serendipitous thing. I’ve had Philomena on my to-read list since seeing this post at A Delectable Life blog…way last year. When I saw the movie, Philomena, at the library, I realized I probably wouldn’t read the book any time soon (too many others to get through)…so I checked out the movie. I liked it (other than the unnecessary use of bad language)… because I love genealogy. One of the characters in the movie quoted T.S. Eliot:
“We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.”
I normally would have NEVER even noticed that quote in the movie, but just the day before, I was inputting a PhD Honors Thesis into a database at work. Part of the title of the thesis was ‘And they shall know the place for the first time’. So, of course, when I heard it again the very next day, my ears were pricked. I’ve since researched T.S. Eliot and learned something NEW. Love it when that happens!
Have a great Monday! Do or learn something NEW!
a NEW awesome artistic medium
Incredible eye make-up huh? I saw this over at Out of The Well blog and she said she saw it at The Journal blog! :o) You should go to either of those sites to see LOTS more examples of this amazing art!
Since my name is LENORE, I just had to post this one! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked, “Oh, do you know there’s a famous poet that wrote a poem called ‘Lenore’?” …Do you mean the famous poet Edgar Allan Poe? Why YES, YES, and YES,….I DID know that! {Quit asking me that!!! :o}
Sorry for the Wednesday Rant! :o) It’s all cool! Have a great day! Do something NEW… (except ask people REALLY obvious questions that may or may not annoy them)!
a NEW (to me) Shel Silverstein poem
As you can see, I’m still playing around with my extension tubes…do you like my pin cushion? Yeah, wow huh? Well, once summer comes, maybe I’ll get to shoot some cool caterpillars or butterflies or something more exciting :o)
I LOVE the last line of that poem! Those are my thoughts exactly :o) Take me, oh take me to anywhere NEW! {Hawaii would be nice}
Have a GREAT day! Do or Learn something NEW!
Thursday’s Thought
As I’ve previously mentioned, I’ve made a goal to use photos from my own stash to post along with quotes I love. Well, I really like this photo of a rodeo clown, but as you can imagine, I haven’t come up with any good quotes to go along with it! 😮 !!! So, for today’s THURSDAY THOUGHT, I attempted a Haiku:
THE RODEO CLOWN
Warm Summer Evening
The Clown Elicits A Smile
Do Unto Others
learning a NEW poetry style: Haiku
Well, I’m definitely NOT a poet! In my family, that would be my Mother, and I’m not about to accroach that distinction! I believe I may have heard about the poetry style of Haiku before…but not being overly interested until recently, I haven’t known what exactly makes a poem a Haiku!
If you are like me and are unfamiliar with Haiku…..learn about it at Haiku – Wikipedia and/or Haiku – WikiHow. {Do it! Click the link and learn something NEW!} 😮
This Haiku by Brian P Cleary brought a smile to my face (as my son is, at this very moment, going through his grades online)!
REPORT CARD
Four days of the year,
One tiny piece of paper
Turns my stomach sour.
There’s even a program that will detect a Haiku in a transcript for you! {check it out here} Although, there’s a lot more to a Haiku than the mere counting of syllables, I thought that sounded like a very fun thing to do! One of these days, I’d like to write a Haiku for/about each family member and have people guess which poem is for each individual. Part of the beauty of writing poetry, is writing in a way that isn’t too transparent…but isn’t too terribly difficult to understand either. It’s a tricky balancing act I think!
Also, as I’ve been poking around poetry sites lately, I learned something else NEW! I did NOT know the United States had a Poet Laureate. Did you!?! Check her out here!
