No Mess Sugar Cookies

Do you want to know the best trick for making sugar cookies….EVER!?!? This technique leaves you with a CLEAN kitchen, CLEAN hands and delicious cookies! When I make sugar cookies, I ONLY dirty one mixing bowl, a measuring cup and measuring spoons. Seriously, that’s it! On the other hand, when my Mother and/or sisters taught me how to make sugar cookies (way back when…), we had flour all over the counters, all over our hands and basically it was A MESS!  My kitchen USED to look like this:

Here is my much NEW and improved method:

Step 1: Mix your favorite sugar cookie dough recipe in a Bosch or other mixer, strong enough that it can do the job completely (without you having to knead extra flour into the dough on the countertop).

Step 2: Place a slightly wet paper towel on your counter (or wherever you will be rolling out your dough), then put a piece of parchment paper over the paper towel….then put a slab of dough on the parchment paper, then another piece of parchment paper on top. The wet paper towel prevents the parchment paper from sliding around while you roll out your dough.

Step 3: Roll your dough out until it’s the desired thickness. Pick up all layers except the paper towel (bottom paper, dough and top paper), and place on a cookie sheet.

Step 4: Repeat until all your dough is on cookies sheets, then put all the sheets in the refrigerator to chill.

Step 5: After…a while….(it could be 20 minutes, but I’ve waiting hours til I’ve had time to come back), simply cut out your shapes, place on parchment lined sheets again and bake!

Your cookie sheets are clean because you have used parchment paper, your rolling-pin is clean…it hasn’t touched a bit of dough…the only dirty thing in the entire kitchen is, again, the mixing bowl and a few measuring items. TRY IT! It’s the best method EVER!

Tip: I used to use waxed paper for rolling out, but something with the wet paper towel and the refrigeration seemed to slightly disintegrate the waxed paper….leaving little bits of paper stuck to your cookie. Parchment paper works a lot better! I just made a batch and timed myself. In less than 15 minutes I had the dough mixed, rolled out and into the refrigerator! Later I’ll bake (probably while the oven is still hot from baking dinner)…then tomorrow I’ll decorate them. Nice system!!!

NEW paper goods organization!

What a difference  a SHELF will make! WOWZA! Having organization in my life gives me a calm exhilaration like none other! I’m not a neat freak, nor OCD, thank goodness….but having nice and neat paper goods is a GOOD THING :o) Don’t you think? It’s efficient! Now, I could care less if my sock drawer is color coded or alphabetized, but if I can pull out napkins for a get-together without them being smashed and crinkled from laying underneath a pile of plastic cups, I’m a happy girl! Look around and organize something NEW today!

Lovin’ my NEW hobby of blogging!

My new hobby of blogging has been a lot of fun! I love being inspired by other bloggers….I love laughing at their funny and sometimes sarcastic posts….I love learning NEW things from them! I REALLY appreciate the time they take to post all the interesting things that they do! (Because now I realize…it’s a bit time consuming…but worth it!) One of the FUNNEST things I experienced, is winning a prize from a blog I follow. Doesn’t winning something just MAKE YOUR DAY!?!?! Winning this cute pillow recently from Pink Polka Dot Creations did just that! Thanks Rita!

NEW Foreign Language Skills

I wanted this blog to explore newness on a variety of subjects…not just crafts, recipes etc. However I’ve found that my quest to improve my photography skills lends better to photographing cutsie crafts and yummy eats than my foreign language endeavors. Oh well…c’est la vie!

Unfortunately, I don’t have any ‘real’ foreign language skills.  However I would love to acquire some! Each time I try to learn some, I don’t keep up the practice and promptly forget what I learned. I do have a sister who is a foreign language Queen….maybe I’ll have to go converse with her! She recently taught me a new french word. We were touring the Parade of Homes together and she mentioned that Etageres were very popular (or should I say avant garde?) The picture at the top of this post is an Etagere….an open-backed shelf. Ever since I learned that new word, I’ve been seeing it quite a few places!

Most of us probably know more foreign words than we realize! Check out this ‘French Words and Expressions in English’ at About.com and see if you’re already using some foreign words!

Explore some Foreign Language Newness today!  There’s lots of resources to do so…check some out!

{Relatively} New Game Room Posters

A few posts ago, when I felt like I was swimming in modge podge, I mentioned my Game Room/TV Room movie posters (previous post here)…and I promised I’d show them to you. This project was earlier in the summer, so it’s only “relatively new” :o)

I picked up a Pirates of the Caribbean picture book from a discount store…I think it was $3! Then I made this collage for our game/tv room. The other posters were also $2-$3…so the entire wall-project, with wood and everything was probably under $20! Nice huh!?! OK, yeah…you can call me cheap mamma! :o)

Thursday’s Thought

I so agree with Wayne Gretzky!  There’s been plenty of times in my life when I didn’t even try to make the shot….and I’ll never know if I would’ve scored or not.  Lesson learned.  Explore Newness!…take the shot!  Maybe it’ll be all net…maybe an air ball…but take the shot!
