an old photo and a short Sunday sermon

butterfly

Happy Sunday!

Apparently I need to go to a butterfly farm and get me some good butterfly pics, because this is the only butterfly in my photo collection!  I shared it way back in June of 2014 – so it’s an old photo.  However, I needed a butterfly pic to go with today’s message. My sister, who lives in Nevada, came to visit and we were in the audience of the Music and the Spoken Word broadcast when this message was televised. I hope you like it as much as we did.

There’s something enchanting about butterflies. Even on our busy days, we almost can’t help but stop and watch when one flutters by. And most of us know the familiar green chrysalis from which a beautiful monarch butterfly will someday emerge.

But what’s happening inside that chrysalis may surprise you. Many of us think a caterpillar is simply hibernating in there, slowly growing wings. But what’s actually happening is even more miraculous. Once encased in a chrysalis, the caterpillar releases enzymes that turn its body into liquid. From this watery soup, the entire creature is rebuilt. The muscles, the nervous system, the heart — everything is completely re-created, and the lowly caterpillar transforms into a brilliant butterfly (see “How Does a Caterpillar Turn into a Butterfly?” by Ferris Jabr, Scientific American, Aug. 10, 2012).

And if such a transformation can happen with caterpillars, why not with people? Can we too, regardless of our past, “put off” our old selves and improve our lives (see Colossians 3:9–10)? Can we undergo an inner metamorphosis as wondrous as the outward transformations we see in nature? Can a life that has experienced failure become a success story?

The answer is yes — not only can we change, we were meant to change. Just as the caterpillar was not created to remain a caterpillar, we were created to grow, progress and improve. If we allow it, life’s experiences have a way of melting away our stubbornness, our selfishness and any other weaknesses we might have — changing us, in effect, into a wiser, more generous and more loving person.

Of course, great change is not immediate any more than nature’s miracle with the caterpillar happens in an instant. Sometimes it may even feel as though we’ve made a soupy mess of things. There may be days when it seems that “the harder [we] try, the harder it gets” (see “The Inconvenient Messiah,” by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, Ensign, February 1984). But if we believe enough to keep trying, we can become more than we have been in the past. Step by step, we can give up bad habits that hold us back, traits that damage relationships and attitudes that darken our outlook. We can acknowledge our mistakes, apologize to those we’ve offended and set a new course toward a brighter future of love, compassion and humility.

Every caterpillar carries within itself the makings of a beautiful butterfly. And every one of us can remake ourselves into a thing of wonder and, on glorious wings, discover we can fly.

a NEW Thursday thought

longhornsquote

Happy Thursday!

I thought I’d add a quote from a cowboy to this western-looking-type scene. It does seem like we do gain good judgement from bad experiences, but I don’t think that’s always the case. Yet, this quote doesn’t mention that it has to be our bad judgement…I like to learn from other people’s mistakes or bad judgement.  How about you?

Have a great day!

a NEW photo and NEW books to read {so many books on my list!}

sculpturegirlreadingfr

Happy Wednesday!

I snapped this pic this week in a lovely NEW garden that was recently completed close to my gym.  I think it was a city project, but whoever it was, they did a really good job.  This statue and another of a boy and girl twirling a jump rope was included in the area — and all the flowers there were just gorgeous!

I also recently learned of a NEW source for finding good books to read. Although, my to-read list is far too long as it is! Especially from BookClub Mom’s awesome reviews! My niece was recently telling me about The Tournament of Books where every Spring, when March Madness Basketball is going on, there’s a book tournament where people vote for books.  They’ve been doing it a long time and past tournament winners are listed on the site. So many good books, so little time!

Have a great day! Do or read something NEW!

a NEW taste Tuesday…copycat Swig cookies

swigcookiesfr

Happy Tuesday!

There’s a locate cookie/soda shop called Swig. I’ve heard people rave over their cookies and although I haven’t personally stopped by, I did try this copycat recipe.  I tried it because it was EASY (and delicious).  These are sugar cookies, but they’re quick because they’re drop cookies.  I got the link from my sister’s daughter-in-law (I guess that’s my neice-in-law?). Anyway, she got the recipe from The Bountiful Kitchen, which is a new site to me.  I think I’ll have to poke around that site a bit — it looked like there were other amazing recipes there too.

Have a great day.  Do or bake something NEW.

a NEW photo and a short Sunday sermon

butchartgardensfr

Happy Sunday!  So I’ve shared a lot of my closeup shots from Butchart Gardens, but here’s an overview of it…(although, it’s only one section of that huge, gorgeous place).  And for today’s short sermon, I’ll simply share an overview of what the Book of Mormon is all about – because I know so many people who just haven’t taken the time to find out. This video (HERE) is less than 3 minutes long, but hopefully you’ll learn something NEW.

Have a wonderful day!

a NEW photo of my week

blackeyedsusans

Happy Friday!  When I saw that Cee’s Flower of the Day was Blackeyed Susans, I quickly grabbed this photo to share. One of my sisters that went to Victoria with us last week is named Susan.  My mother says she named her that because Susan had such black eyes when she was a baby.

Anyway, I’ll link up to Cee’s page.  Enjoy your day – and do or learn something NEW!

a NEW taste Tuesday…for doggies

dyzyclose

Happy Tuesday! Well, for today’s NEW taste…I tried out some doggie treats to give to my grand-dogs.  I’m (very patiently) waiting for grand-babies to come along, but at the moment, all I have are grand-dogs. 🙂 So I decided to make them all some treats.

These pics are of Dizy, I’ve photographed Patch before (here) and I still need to schedule a shoot with Rocky. When I got a shot of Dizy with her eyes closed, I had to try and be funny and Photoshop this one to make Dizy look like she’s winking. (How’d I do? :o)

I thought these Bacon Pumpkin Doggie treats even sounded good enough for us humans to eat!

Miscellaneous Monday…NEW stuff i gotta share

beeatbutchartfr

Happy Monday!  Here’s (one of many) pics from the beautiful Butchart Gardens in Victoria BC.  I wish I knew what kind of plant this is. If anyone can enlighten me, please do. I’m sad I didn’t get a better shot of the bumblebee for you. 🙂

OK, for today miscellany:

I caught me a NEW cold last week (not fun).  I always seem to catch something every time I hop on an airplane!  Can anyone give me any tips on how I can avoid that?  Please???!!!  I meant to overrun my system with vitamin C beforehand, but forgot.  I also seem to remember a SharkTank episode where someone invented some semi-inconspicuous thing to go over your nose that kept out all the airborne junk, but I can’t remember if any of the sharks went for it.

Another random thing…we bought NEW pickleball racquets and have had fun playing at a nearby park. Who plays pickleball?  Have you played in any tournaments?

I bought a NEW compost bin that spins…does anyone have any tips for making sure you have the right nitrogen/carbon ratio?  I gotta get me some dried up leaves to go with my kitchen scraps…soon.

I recently saw this kayak that folds up! How cool (and expensive) is that?!?  I would love to get one (well, we’d probably need two) and do this road trip:  Drive to Moses Lake, WA and kayak that lake.  Do a day-trip to Lake Lenore (I didn’t know there was such a place for a really long time).  Head to Coeur d’Alene ID and kayak on that beautiful blue water (I drove by once, and that blue water took my breath away!)  Visit Glacier National Park, then kayak on nearby Flathead Lake.  Then come home.  How does that plan sound?  If anyone has been to any of the above, feel free to share tips or recommendations.  I figure if I put my vacation plans/ travel bucket lists in writing, perhaps eventually they will actual happen.

That’s enough random stuff for today.  Have a good one and do or learn something NEW today!

NEW boat photos of my week

boat1

Happy Wednesday!

I think I’m obsessed with boats – or at least photographing boats on calm, beautiful blue water!  It must be because I live in the desert.  I recently went on a girls weekend getaway to Seattle and Victoria, BC.  It was a fun sister-party! Here are more boat pics from the weekend – and boy, do I have tons of botanical pics from Butchart Gardens to share (eventually).

Someone had fun sailing between the San Juan islands.

boat5

This is a twin of the ferry we waited three hours to get on, to go to BC!  Who knew it was a Canadian holiday and a three-day weekend!!??!!  Note to sisters – check Canadian calendar next time!  Here…I’ll save us the trouble: Canadian Statutory Holidays.

I should make a jigsaw puzzle out of the one above, eh? It would be a tough one. :o)

boat3

White on blue – one of my favorite color schemes!

And…one more…a tiny boat among docked boats:
