Miscellaneous Monday…NEW stuff i gotta share

firewoodcollage

Happy Monday!

So…some people are quite creative with their firewood, right?!?  This place is just off a busy street about 5 minutes from my house…I’ve photographed some of their other ‘work’ before {previous post here}.

Hmm…so what else is NEW?  I recently finished A Traitor’s Wife:

traitorswife

I really like historical fiction, and although this book seemed a little drawn-out, especially in the middle of the book, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I’ve started my next quilting project.  It will be something similar to this except in blues and whites:

cubtreats

Happy Monday!  So, you are probably wondering what’s with the patriotic rice krispie treats, right?  Yes, I know it’s October :o)  I just had to share this MISCELLANEOUS photo and let you know how SUPER EASY these are!  I made these this week because a little cub scout den I needed to visit were learning about the flag and I wanted to take them something ‘theme-related’ for their treat.  But seriously, if you have a variety of sprinkles, (black/orange for October….pastels for Spring….red/white/blue for July) and marshmallows, rice cereal and chocolate chips, you can whip up this super easy, (but not quite as boring as plain rice krispie treats) ANY TIME.  Just always keep these items in your pantry and you will always ‘BE PREPARED’.  Yup!  You can tell I raised four boys….all Eagle scouts :o)

And…one more miscellaneous thing…

a Book Review:  I recently read this children’s book (grade level 3 – 7) and enjoyed it very much.  It was  a very quick read and it has won quite a few awards, so I guess I’m not the only one who has enjoyed it.

a NEW Texture Tuesday photo

gardenandlibrary

Happy Tuesday!  It’s pretty much true that if you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need!  I automatically picture a flower garden as a necessity, but I’m sure whoever originally said that probably meant vegetable garden. :o)

Have a great day!  Do or learn…or grow…something NEW!

monocollage

Happy Monday!  So along with the above collage of miscellaneous monochromes…here’s a few other random things I’ve found interesting lately:

I saw this recently and loved it!

marktwainbicycle

The décor at my hubby’s work office…(the very few personal items he has there, at least)… is a bicycle theme – so I HAD to print this out and frame it for him to take to work.  :o)  It made me laugh.

I also recently read…

confcode

…and enjoyed it very much.  Why?  Because I’m such a brain science junkie, I guess.  It had lots of research backing up their statements.  I saw a lot of truth in it…just from observing people throughout the years.  To boil it down very simply:  Confidence is linked to DOING.  The more we DO something, the more confident we are that we can succeed at it.  I know that’s not rocket science, but the book had a lot of really good advice – especially for women, and it was well-written.

And lastly, as tradition goes…here’s my weekly NEW food find:  I’ve never heard of taro root before – not to mention taro root ice cream.  Sounds interesting!  I hope to try it….sometime. :o)

Happy Monday!  OK…so help me out here…what’s the word to describe when you seem to notice certain things all of a sudden?  It seems like a coincidence that I’ve been noticing cool mandalas recently.  It’s like a power that draws them to me…and they keep popping up in whatever I read lately.  Is it the law of attraction?  Is it because I recently decided that they’re very cool and I’m now a magnet for them? It’s kind of like serendipity, but not really.  What is the word to describe this phenomenon?   Anyway!  Check out the VERY cool mandalas I’ve run across lately:

I first found the cool sticker mandala (above) at The Amateur Librarian’s blog.  I, of course, had to check out the  history of mandalas at Wiki, and since they’ve been popping up a lot, I’ve pinned a few to my Pinterest boards.  Here are a couple:

Another miscellaneous NEW thing in my life lately was reading Endurance.

endurance

It was our book club pick for this month, and since I’ve missed book club for the last three months, I really wanted to get back at it.  I’m glad I read this book!  It was a long read of what seems like the only villain of the story was the weather and it concentrated A LOT on the weather…but really, what else could be the gist of the story!?! It is a true story and since I enjoy history, I rather liked the book and I’m happy I got to learn about the amazing men that went through that ordeal!

So!  Best wishes for a terrific week ahead!  Do or learn something NEW!

a NEW book review

happiness

Hi all!  I recently finished reading ‘The Happiness Project’, and I have to say I enjoyed it very much.  I haven’t read a non-fiction book in a while  – because I’m usually just struggling to finish the novels picked out for our book club before our meeting time!  And I don’t even remember who recommended this book.  I’ve had it on my Shelfari “shelf” for quite a while now.  (That’s the online site where I keep track of all the books I’ve read and all the book I want to read)  So I FINALLY got to it!  It has motivated me to make and keep some resolutions and give myself a few ‘gold stars’.  :o)  I’ll also have to start reading the author’s blog.  I’m sure that will help keep me motivated.

I love, loVE, LOVE book recommendations…so let me know if you have any for me!  Have a great day!  Do or Learn something NEW!

a NEW Thursday Thought

lonetulip

This NEW photo reminded me of the book “The Black Tulip” by Alexandre Dumas, so I thought today’s thought should come from that book:

“God orders a man to do all he can to save his life.”

Last year I posted my book review of the The Black Tulip.  I enjoy Dumas’ writing. I think it’s time to find another of his books to read….soon.

Have a great Thursday!

a NEW emphasis….consistency

rowoftrees

I’ve been thinking a lot about consistency lately.  I thought this row of blossoming trees was a good NEW photo pick for today.  Just as these beautiful trees form a consistent pattern as you look down this street, consistency in life can also be a very beautiful thing.

Here are some particularly WONDERFUL quotes about consistency:

conistencyquotes

I’ve found that, in most cases, a conscious effort to be consistent is needed…even with the most simplest of things.  A few months ago, I read Faithful, Fit & Fabulous by Connie Sokol after reading the recommendation at Pinkpolkadotcreations.

sokol

Although there wasn’t anything particularly new or different about this book, it basically encouraged readers to set a NEW goal every week….even if it is something VERY simple  Actually, the simpler the BETTER!  I decided that I’d make a conscious effort to keep the floor of my closet clear.  Instead of kicking off my shoes and leaving them on the floor, I would put them where they belong.  So, the ONLY shoes that have been left on my closet floor for months now, are my slippers (I wanted my slippers out on purpose).  And it’s been a VERY GOOD FEELING!!!  I won’t bore you with all my other very small goals, but even a BIG goal can be broken down into small goals, and the same method would be just as successful.

Try it!  A goal a week…make a conscious effort…be consistent!  Try something NEW!

cccookies

My children think VERY HIGHLY of the chocolate chip cookie recipe I received from a friend years and years and years ago!  Once someone offered my young son a “Mrs Field’s Cookie” and he asked it if was as good as a Dianne Larsen cookie!  Here’s the recipe:

Recipe Card Template 1up 4x6

I saw this YouTube video quite a while ago, but it still makes me smile!  I want to have fun times like this with my husband when we’re old and gray…..(well, older and more gray!)

AND lastly, I recently learned of a website where people could take a quiz and learn what their ‘Love Language’ is {HERE is the link}.  I remember reading The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman, and liking it, so I took the quiz.  It was a HARD quiz!!!  You have to choose between two really good options on each question!  But I think I’ll have my hubby take the quiz (because I don’t think I’ll be able to get him to read the book)….but it’ll be good to know his love language (Words of Affirmation, Quality Time,  Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service or Physical Touch) so I can better cater to his needs.  By the way, at the first of the quiz, it asks for name and email address, but if you proceed, you can take it without giving any personal info.  (nice huh?)

NEW photos of my week #41

oldcollage2

This week I took a short over-night trip to visit my Mom and Sister, and to also go with them to see The 5 Browns in concert.  On the way home, I stopped at various rural towns to take some pics.  It’s obvious that the old and the weathered caught my eye that day….nothing NEW!

The concert was FABULOUS!!!  50 fingers were flying!  Here’s a sample of how good they are:

On the trip I also listened to a book on CD, “A Girl Named Zippy“,  that the teacher of a family history class recommended.  The book is random stories of the childhood of Zippy.   It was nice to listen to….but I don’t think I would’ve liked reading it, since there really was no plot etc.  But it was a good example of how interesting our own personal histories can be.  (And a good reminder to me to start writing a few things down before I forget them!)
